Excavation in El Cajon

El Cajon has the ADU math everyone else wants: large flat lots, older houses worth improving and a valley floor that digs faster than the hills around it. A backyard unit that pencils marginally on a canyon lot in the city pencils comfortably here, and the permit activity shows it. Site prep on a typical valley-grid lot runs at the friendly end of our published $8,000 to $25,000 ADU range because the grading is honest and the access usually is too.

The name Granite Hills is not decoration. East of the valley floor the soil turns to cobble and weathered granite, and digging there is a different sport: slower buckets, occasional breaker work and trenches that earn their price per foot. We quote El Cajon by neighborhood soil rather than by square footage alone, which is why our numbers hold from Bostonia to the Fletcher Hills edge.

Beyond ADU pads the valley generates steady utility work: laterals for the aging grid streets, footing digs for additions and pool removals as the 1970s backyard pools reach the end of their loyalty. All of it prices off the same public table.

The cobble under the valley

El Cajon trenches meet cobble the way other towns meet roots: constantly and without warning. A river of rounded stone runs under much of the valley from its alluvial past, and it eats trencher teeth while it slows excavators. Our trench pricing here carries a stated cobble allowance instead of a surprise change order, because we would rather tell you at the quote than at the trench.

Around El Cajon the calls come from the Fletcher Hills edge, the valley grid off Main Street, Bostonia, Granite Hills, covering ZIPs 92019, 92020, 92021. If your property is near those, odds are we have probed ground within sight of it.

Asked across the valley

Why do trench quotes in El Cajon vary so much per foot?

Soil, almost entirely. Our published trench range is $25 to $80 per linear foot, and El Cajon uses the whole range: sandy fill digs at the bottom of it while cemented cobble pushes the top. We probe during the site walk so the quote reflects your dirt.

Is my flat El Cajon lot really cheaper for ADU prep than a canyon lot in the city?

Usually by thousands. Flat access with room for a full-size machine means fewer machine days, no benching and simple compaction. The savings show up in the site-prep line before your builder ever frames a wall.

Can you take out our old pool before the ADU goes in?

Yes, and doing both with one mobilization saves real money. Partial-fill removals run $6,000 to $12,000 and full removals $9,000 to $20,000 on the public table. If a structure will ever sit over the footprint, it needs the full removal with compacted engineered fill, and we say so plainly.

Cabrillo Excavation digs the whole county. See the cost guide, the ADU site prep page, or nearby areas: La Mesa, Chula Vista, Lakeside.
