La Mesa is where San Diego’s ADU wave meets real terrain. The postwar lots here are generous by city standards, which makes them prime backyard-unit candidates, but many of them climb. A flat pad on a Mount Helix hillside is a cut-and-fill exercise with compaction reports, not an afternoon with a skid steer, and pricing it honestly up front is most of what separates a smooth ADU project from a stalled one.
Our La Mesa work splits between ADU site prep and the maintenance digs an older suburb generates: sewer lateral trenches for houses now seventy years into their clay pipe, footing excavations for room additions and the occasional pool from the 1960s coming out to make room for the new unit. The village blocks dig differently than the hills. Down near La Mesa Boulevard the lots are flatter but tighter, so the work is about compact machines through narrow gates rather than benching a slope. We quote the machine to the lot, not the other way around.
What Mount Helix does to a dig schedule
Mount Helix cuts hit rock more often than the rest of our map. The decomposed granite that makes these hills stable also makes them slow digging once you get past the topsoil, and a quote that assumed sandy loam will grow on you mid-project. We probe the cut line during the site walk, which is why our hillside numbers hold.

Can an ADU pad really go on my sloped La Mesa lot?
Usually yes, and the honest question is cost rather than possibility. A cut-and-fill pad with proper compaction on a moderate slope typically adds $3,000 to $8,000 over flat-lot prep. We walk the lot, shoot grades and give you the number in writing before your designer gets too far.
How much is a sewer lateral trench for an older La Mesa house?
Most lateral trenches here land between $3,500 and $12,000 for the excavation side, driven by depth, length to the main and how much hardscape sits over the line. Your plumber sets the pipe; we open and close the ground safely with 811 marks done first.
Do you handle the compaction reports the city wants for a pad?
We build pads to the geotechnical spec and coordinate directly with your soils engineer for the compaction testing the permit requires. The digging and the paperwork have to agree, and we have done this dance with the county and city inspectors plenty.
